From a linguistic standpoint, this could be looked at as simply an unavoidable and natural evolution of the language, much like the Great Vowel Shift. Likewise, the advent of the cell phone could be looked back on as having the same linguistic impact as the Norman Conquest.
But I think all of us non-linguists know that teenagers are just getting lazy as hell.
